The Mitsubishi i-MiEV went on general sale in Japan on 1 April 2010, following fleet sales from July 2009.

The Nissan Leaf battery-electric car has been produced by Nissan since 2010; production began at the Oppama plant in Yokosuka.

Toyota won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2018, the first Japanese-manufacturer win there since Mazda in 1991.

Toyota won the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times in a row from 2018 to 2020 with the TS050 Hybrid, and again in 2021 and 2022 with the GR010 Hybrid.

After returning to the WRC in 2017, Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT won the manufacturers' title in 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024; its drivers' champions were Ott Tänak (2019), Sébastien Ogier (2020, 2021) and Kalle Rovanperä (2022, 2023).
