The V35 Skyline was the first Skyline exported to North America, sold from 2002 as the Infiniti G35.

The Japanese industry's 280 PS voluntary limit was abandoned in 2004.

On 30 June 2004 the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association informed the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism that it would abolish the 280 PS limit; the fourth-generation Honda Legend (300 PS) was the first car afterwards to exceed it in catalogue specifications.

Lexus was introduced as a brand in Japan in 2005; until then its models were sold domestically under Toyota names.

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric car was launched for fleet customers in Japan in July 2009 and for the general public on 1 April 2010.
